What Are NFC Modules? A Beginner's Guide

Near-field Communication (NFC) is a wireless technology that allows for the contactless exchange of information with a simple tap of a smartphone. Below are some frequently asked questions about NFC and its functionality.

  • Near-field communication technology enables two devices to communicate wirelessly without the need for power. This technology can be integrated into products, allowing data transfer between nearby mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices.

  • Very simply any modern smartphone, for most people, this means either Android or Apple iOS.

Android has had native support since 2010 including but not limited to devices from Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo, Lenovo, Sony, Vivo, Asus, HTC, Alcatel, ZTE.

Apple has featured native support on all models since 2018 (15, 14, 13, 12, 11, XS & XR).

  • It’s easy!

    1. Locate where the NFC tag is located on the object you are scanning.

    2. Slowly wave with the top of your phone (Apple) or the phone back side (most Androids) close on that spot.

    3. Once scanned, a notification may appear – confirm and launch the experience.

  • NFC modules can be integrated into almost any product, making them suitable for items that need to be washed and dried. We work with you to find the perfect tag for your individual requirements. For embedded products an NFC tag will last the useable life of the product.

  • NFC transfers data between devices within a very limited distance, specifically up to 3 inches (10 cm). This means for a connection to occur, devices must be extremely close, providing an added layer of security against potential remote hacking attempts.

Banks and financial institutions rely on NFC, with it underpinning major payment platforms like Apple Pay and Android Pay, which together handle over $7 trillion in transactions each year.

  • Almost certainly. We make it easy to integrate modules into almost any product. We can customize the scanning distance for your specific need (i.e., scanning within packaging or under brand logo). All tags can be customized regarding size, color, label material, water proofing, metal applications, serial number inclusion. WaveOn also leverages new RFID/NFC technologies as they become available, working with you to find the ideal module for your product.
